R.E.M. may have disbanded, but that doesn’t mean they’re quiet. In fact, heavily-bearded front man Michael Stipe still pops up every now and then — which he did on Thursday night on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

In fact, the segment was especially inspired. A riff on R.E.M.’s hit “It’s the End of the World” was re-done by Colbert and Stipe, but with lyrics set to the … eventful year that was 2016. With Colbert taking lead vocal duties (and doing quite well, given the rapid-fire requirements of the song), Stipe stood there, defiant, refusing to say that he feels ‘fine’ until the end — when James Franco pops up as well.
